Granted by Massachusetts to some residents of Ipswich, Massachuse ts in 1736, and then chartered to New Hampshire in 1766, New Ipswich still retains much of its historic past with the Barrett House being one o f the best-known landmarks in town. In addition, a portion of the town center along Main Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town was also home to the first cotton mill in the state of New Hampshire. The town is also boasts a significant inventory of scenic beauty and opportunities to enjoy it. The Wapack Trail cuts through the western side of town and offers spectacular views from the summits of Barrett Mountain and New Ipswich Mountain. The hike up to the top of Kidder Mountain also offers a commanding view of the surrounding area and is a much easier climb than the other two. New Ipswich is also home to Windblown Ski Area which is well known in the area and offers 25 miles of wooded trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing for hardy souls that enjoy activities outdoors during our cold New England winters. The New Ipswich Conservation Commission manages 16 conservation areas, most of which are available for the public to visit and enjoy. |
