Granted to New Hampshire by King George II in 1741 after the great border dispute between Massachusetts and New Hampshire, Jaffrey was then incorporated as a township in 1773. Today, the town is home to about 5,500 residents. With the establishment of the Jaffrey Historic District Commission, the citizens of the town set out to preserve the town's treasures from the past. With the creation of a historic district in the town's center, much of the character of the region's past is carefully preserved for current and future generations to enjoy and appreciate as well as to draw tourism to the area. Once a popular resort destination for visitors who came from all areas of New England, Jaffrey has been successful in its efforts to retain the scenic beauty of the town. With 5,000 acres of protected highlands that make up Monadnock State Park, Jaffrey offers much to the outdoor enthusiast. It is said that Monadnock was the mountain most loved by Henry David Thoreau. In fact, a trail within the park has been named for the famous author and naturalist to keep his memory alive for all who enjoy nature as much as he did. |
