See Dish Network TV In Action

I thought it might be interesting to show some of the features of Dish Network Television as it appears on my TV screen when I use it, so I threw some videos together that show some of my favorite features of my Dish Network VIP622 DVR.

Please understand that these videos are not high-quality. They were recorded from my HD-capable DVR onto a non-HD DVD recorder and them moved to my PC. As a result, the quality has been reduced significantly, but they are good enough to show you some of the best features.

Please excuse the name of my website splashed across each video, but with so many idiots on the net who go around stealing stuff to use for their own greedy purposes, I like to make it as difficult as I can for them.

Just click the following links below to view the videos. They will open in a new window, so you may need to disable any pop-up blockers you may have running. They are also wider than the format of this site, so you may have some trouble viewing them if you are not using at least 1024 x 768 resolution on your monitor.

Hit the green "Play" button in the lower-right corner of each video window to watch.

Click To Watch Video 1: Watching A Recorded Program

This video shows how I check my list of recorded programs, view the program description of a program and then begin watching it.

Click To Watch Video 2: The "Commercial Skip" Button - One of my favorites for sure!

I've never heard that Dish Network refers to this as a "commercial skip" feature. That name is something I came up with because that is what I use it for! All this magic button on the remote control does is advance the recorded program you are watching about 30 seconds ahead.

This video shows how quickly I can zap commercials with this feature. In the video, I am blasting through about 6 commercials and a couple of short local station self-promotion bits. I am able to get through all these commercials by pressing the button about 7 times, and as you can see, I "overshoot" a little at the end and have to hit the "jump back" button once to get right back to the spot where the show comes back on.

Click To Watch Video 3: The Fast Forward And Rewind Buttons

This demonstrates the Fast-Forward and Rewind features of the Dish Network VIP622 DVR. Both Fast-Forward and Rewind can operate in speeds of 4, 15, 60 and 300 times the normal speed.

Click To Watch Video 4: The Picture-In-Picture Feature

My favorite use for the Picture-In-Picture feature is when a commercial break starts. I switch to another channel to avoid watching the same commercials over and over again and I keep the original program in the PIP window so I can see when the commercial break ends and I can return to watching it.

In the video I show the various sizes you can select for the PIP window and how the "Swap" button works to switch the programs back and forth between the PIP window and the main screen.

Click To Watch Video 5: The Program Search Feature

I really love the way the new DVRs hold so much programming information. I can see programming information on the program guide days in advance and with that much programming information, it can take some time to read through the list looking for a program you want to watch.

The search feature can locate a program for you a lot faster and you can search for just about any program you want. The video shows me searching for the program Planet Earth, (which I just love) and then setting the DVR to record the program for me.

Click To Watch Video 6: Program Guide And Recording Programs

The Program Guide stores the programming information for all the programs that are scheduled to air on whatever Dish Network programming package you are subscribed to.

This video shows me looking through the Program Guide and then selecting a program to record. Recording offers useful options like recording the program once, every time it is on or just new episodes.

Notice then when I am done setting up the program I want to record you will see an "X" in the program guide where the program appears since I set the DVR to record only new episodes and the episodes that happen to show in the section of the program guide I am viewing are not new episodes and the "X" is telling me that these programs are not scheduled to be recorded.

Click To Watch Video 7: Dish On Demand Movies

Like the "on demand" movies that the cable companies offer where you can pick a movie to watch any time you want, Dish Network offers "Dish On Demand" where you can essentially "rent" a movie to watch any time you want.

They still have the Pay-Per-View movies and programs where they run certain programs and movies over and over again all day long and you can sign up to watch during one of the scheduled times for the program.

To be perfectly honest, "Dish On Demand" is a feature I have not used and probably won't use in the future. With services like Netflix, you can get more movies and pay a lot less for them. If you are a real "gotta have it now"-type person, and cannot wait a day or two for Netflix to send you a DVD, this is a Dish Network feature might be something you would use.

Click To Watch Video 8: Instant Weather

Dish Network "Instant Weather" is another one of those interactive features. This one shows you weather information and forecasts for various areas of the country.

You can see on the "Dish Home" interactive page, you will see that there are lots of other options for news, sports information, games and other stuff, but the weather information is a good demonstration for the kind of information you can get and how it works.
